Snowmobiling piece feature color photographs and fascinating narrative.
Each speaks highly of the annual Homecoming event while applauding the
Cuyuna Range Chamber of Commerce’s role in keeping Scorpion memories
alive.

heartwarming story provided a brief overview of Trail-A-Sled, Inc, and
Scorpion snowmobiles, as well as the Harrison family. Homecoming 2008
was noted as well as a promo for
Homecoming
2009.

Milder temperatures brought hundreds of exhibitors and on-lookers to the
Cuyuna Range Chamber of Commerce's fourth-annual Scorpion Homecoming.
Held once again on Crosby's Serpent Lake, the Homecoming featured the
1970 Stinger, of which 22 were displayed. For a full review of this

The coldest temperatures of the year (-20
Fahrenheit) didn't keep a
dedicated contingent of
antique snowmobilers from attending this year's event. Of special note for
Scorpion fans was the fascinating keynote address by former Scorpion
Squadron member David "Mouse" Karpik of
BLADE
Motorsports Group, Inc.. Trail-A-Sled, Inc./Scorpion, Inc. co-founder Dick Harrison's
was also on hand with a few excellent machines (Dick's zero-mileage 1972 Stingerette won People's Choice).
Industry patriarch Edgar Hetteen
and his son and daughter-in-law Ronn and Nila attended with
their fascinating
historical
videos. Also present was Cliff Kittelson, former Trail-A-Sled
foreman and racer who once held the world's distance jumping record on a
Trail-A-Sled and Don Peterson who raced the Duluth Indoor for Scorpion. The
Pequot Lakes Echo
was present as was the
American
Snowmobiler television show which covered most of the event.

John Hopkins University Press
publishes
Motorized Obsessions - Life, Liberty, and the Small-Bore Engine.
Penned by Professor Paul R. Josephson, this well-researched volume presents
a compelling history of the internal combustion engine. While raising
significant cause for environmental concern, Prof. Josephson does provide a
balanced recap of Trail-A-Sled, Inc. and Scorpion it's second chapter
titled, Elk-Snowmobile Syndrome.

Scorpion Trails once again participated in this casual, warm-weather
event. Thanks to all who stopped-by the trailer to share some old
stories. The new Scorpion beanie cap was debuted (although sales in the
summer heat proved lackluster).

the article accurately summarized Trail-A-Sled, Inc.'s contributions,
including forward-engine prototypes as early as 1962. Such a machine was
featured in large contemporary photograph.

Super Sled Shoot-Out II featured an indoor display of vintage
snowmobiles this year. Several local Scorpion collectors presented their

Scorpion Trails attended the
Outlaw Grass
Drags this year. This rapidly growing and professionally conducted
event drew nearly 18,000 persons for a beautiful, late-summer weekend in
central Minnesota. Dick Harrison and
family were also present.
July 4, 2005
– Crosby-Ironton, MN
For the second year in a row, a large showing of Scorpion Snowmobiles
graced Crosby-Ironton's long-standing July 4th parade. Eleven units
presented a full history of the Cuyuna Range's snowmobile heritage, from
the 1960 all-fiberglass air-sled to the TK and Sidewinder. Former
Scorpion dealer and racer Les Pinz, along
with Nunny Vukelich (long-time plant
manager) awed the crowd with repeated (and extremely noisy) on-road
demonstrations of Les' actual racing machines - circa 1970 [see
related photograph]. Several former employees of the firm were also
featured.
March 13, 2005
– Twin Cities, MN
Scorpion snowmobiles and Crosby-Ironton's recent
Scorpion Homecoming were the subject of a
fascinating television feature from the famed outdoor production studios
of Minnesota Bound.
The story, which featured both Scorpion and
Cuyuna Range
history, was first broadcast on Sunday evening, March 13th (KARE
11). Additional showings in Fargo, North Dakota (KVLY)
and Duluth, Minnesota (KBJR)
quickly followed. Minnesota Bound described the story as follows, "Our Man About the
Woods, Bill
Sherck, profiles one of the early brands of snowmobiles, the
Scorpion. Bill goes for a snowy ride down memory lane with fans of this
classic snow machine." Video clips are available on the

Titled "Scorpion Homecoming Draws over 250 Sleds," the March issue of
Minnesota Snowmobiling (official publication of
Minnesota
United Snowmobilers Association – MnUSA) included an excellent
first-hand account of the recent Scorpion-only event. Featuring several
color photographs, the breadth and sheer number of attendees was
enthusiastically praised. The author also noted that "unless you
were there, you can't imagine the diversity of sleds produced by this
proud brand during a 20+ years span." The article further
entrenched Scorpion enthusiasts as one of the most active groups among
any now-defunct snowmobile brand. Extensive coverage of MnUSA's
recent Rendezvous was also provided, including a color photograph of
Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty aboard a 1966 Trail-A-Sled model.

The
Cuyuna Range Chamber of Commerce expanded their
long-standing
Annual Ice Fishing Contest to also include a very special snowmobile
event ... Scorpion Homecoming - Exhibition & Trail Ride.
Commemorating the Cuyuna Range's central role in the development of the
snowmobile, this first-ever gathering brought together collectors,
racers and former Scorpion employees for a weekend of memories among a
wonderful display of these marvelous homegrown machines. Ranging
from the early air-sleds of 1960 to the firm's final production run in
1981, a wide variety of locally-built snowmobiles was presented adjacent
to the ice fishing contest on picturesque Serpent Lake.

American Snowmobiler
includes an excellent article featuring the merits of the 1979 Scorpion
TK/TKX. The article was penned by the magazine's legendary founding editor,
Jerry Bassett. Titled Scorpion TK - The shape of things that didn't
get very far (a lighthearted play on the firm's marketing slogan),
Jerry's article extols the virtues of what would become one of Scorpion's final home-grown designs
(subsequent models generally incorporated Arctic Cat features). Jerry
also choose to highlight the TK's Para-Rail suspension as "one of the
most innovative rear suspensions ever seen." Pick-up a

trailer as a record number of snowmobile enthusiasts dropped-by to swap
stores and admire the large number of antique and vintage machines on
display, including an extremely rare circa
1960 Trail-A-Sled air-sled. An excellent event, through
Outlaw Grass Drags the Rum River Trail Association and the
Open Trails
ATV Club continue to build a highly organized weekend for both
snowmobile and ATV enthusiasts alike.

For the first time in many years
Scorpion snowmobiles once again graced Crosby-Ironton's July 4th parade
as a large contingent of enthusiasts from the Moose Lake and Willow
River areas of Minnesota collaborated with Trail-A-Sled, Inc. co-founder
and president
Glen Gutzman along with his wife Judy. Together they
presented a wonderful display of these fine machines. Set upon three
floats, seventeen beautiful original and restored Scorpions were shown,

Scorpion Trails traveled west to
enjoy a glorious weekend of South Dakota sunshine at the Whetstone
Valley Antique and Vintage Show in beautiful
Milbank. The
largest such event yet, the casual atmosphere and hospitality assured a
good time was had by all (not to mention the wide range of award-winning
Scorpions in attendance). Plan on attending next year's event - already
scheduled for the first weekend in June, 2005.

A busy ten days of antique and vintage activities concluded with the
International Snowmobile
Hall of Fame's annual induction ceremony. Scorpion Trails and Dick
Harrison were on hand to join in congratulating 2004 inductees Don
Lumley of Ontario and Bob Persson of Sweden. Long-time Minnesota
legislator Bob Lassard was also honored with the Allen Hetten Award of
Merit. Organized in conjunction
with the Antique
Snowmobile Club of America, the event culminated a week which saw a
large number of quality machines prominently displayed within the
Central Square Mall. Area residents and co-founders of Grand Rapids' own
ASV Inc, Gary Lemke
and Edgar Hetteen were on hand for the
evening with
Edgar (past inductee) lightening the
mood and congratulating the new inductees. As always, the event was well

Iron Dog Tracks (Vol. 19, No. 5) member newsletter.

Snowmobile Club, the 4th Annual Vintage Snowmobile Rally-Show & Swap
Meet was held on the shores of
beautiful Lake Minnewaska (sans the Glenwood Ballroom) amid a strong
showing from feature sleds John Deere and Massey Ferguson. The Saturday evening banquet
included a fascinating review of John Deere's cross-country success in
the mid-1970's and a few words of Scorpion history from Randy Harrison.

Hosted by Midwest Vintage Snowmobile Shows,
the 14th annual Waconia 2004, VSCA Midwest
Ride-In brought thousands of
vintage enthusiasts to the south shores of beautiful Lake Waconia. This
year's rally featured cross-country racers and Yamaha. The fine folks
from the Snowmobile Hall of Fame were on hand and Dick Harrison displayed a
number of items from his personal collection. Highlighting the
Internet's positive impact upon the hobby, Saturday's evening banquet
featured a few words from Larry Preston of
VintageSleds.com,
Loren Anderson of the
Snowmobile
Hall of Fame and Randy Harrison of
Scorpion Trails. As
always, the VSCA
provided excellent coverage of the event (Vol. 17, No. 1). Next
year's event will feature mini-snowmobiles and is scheduled for late
January 2005.

The Minneapolis - St. Paul
Star Tribune published a
Home &
Garden feature highlighting the collectibility of Scorpion
snowmobiles. Titled
Back on Track - Vintage Snowmobile Collection Restores a Legacy,
Reunites a Family, the article featured the
Dick Harrison family (Dick was one of three Trail-A-Sled, Inc. founders) along with
quotes from Dave Guenther, President of the
Antique Snowmobile Club
of America and long-time Minneapolis-based Scorpion collector Mike
Linnenkamp. The story also included,
a brief history of Scorpion. Upcoming events, resources and an on-line slide show were
also featured. With a weekday circulation of nearly 400,000 papers and
daily Internet page views of 2,000,000, the
Star Tribune
story provided an pleasant boost to the antique and vintage hobby.
Numerous additional media outlets also picked-up the syndicated story.
The Star Tribune article was
well received and became the topic of considerable discussion on
Joe Soucheray's
AM
1500 KSTP Garage Logic radio show this afternoon. Randy Harrison (a
contributor to the Scorpion article) called-in for an impromptu
interview on the popular Twin Cities program with Joe and the rest of the
Garage Logic
team. The two spoke for many minutes, outlining the background of the
story while discussing the vintage hobby and Scorpion snowmobiles in
particular. The upcoming rally in Waconia was also mentioned several
times. Somewhat uncharacteristically (Joe writes for the competing
St. Paul
Pioneer Press), Joe was thoroughly complementary of the topic and
the Tribune's coverage.

The
10th Annual Antique Snowmobile Rendezvous drew large crowds this
year amid brilliant sunshine and ample snow.
KSTP television's
Jason Davis of
On The Road attended Friday's trail ride and a resulting TV
broadcast in late February is planned (scheduled for airing February 28
10:30 PM KSTP). Several snowmobile luminaries
attended the festivities including publisher C.J. Ramstad, Polaris
co-founder David Johnson and wife Eleanor as well as Elmer Cone of the
International
Snowmobile Hall of Fame. Randy Harrison expressed a few words of
thanks to the group. In addition, Saturday evening's banquet saw
Dick Harrison (one of three Trail-A-Sled,
Inc. founders) win the People's Choice award with his
1960 Trail-A-Sled airsled.

weekend.

co-founder received dual awards this evening, including the Alan Hetteen Award of
Merit and a well-deserved induction into the
International Snowmobile
Hall of Fame. The evening's banquet was hosted by the Sawmill Inn
and also included moving tributes to the firm's other founders, Glen Gutzman
(who served as President) and Stub Harrison (who served as Vice

1 – 2, 2003 – Waconia, MN
Waconia witnessed a record-setting
rally, hosted by Midwest Vintage Snowmobile Shows. Participants
came from across the country and well into Canada to enjoy the
program. Warm
temperatures prevailed on Saturday as attendees participated in the largest
single day in the rally's history. Many people attended the evening
banquet and stopped-by to enjoy the large
exhibit of Trail-A-Sled, Inc. & Scorpion memorabilia and to chat with
Trail-A-Sled, Inc. co-founder Dick Harrison. Though Sunday brought the
winter's largest snowfall, many people remained to visit the Scorpion
exhibit now displayed at the Waconia Lakeside Ballroom. More than
3,500 individuals attended the rally weekend. A
1960 all-fiberglass
air-sled was also publicly presented for the first time in decades.

Another successful Antique Snowmobile Rendezvous was conducted, and despite
the lack of snow and bitter wind chills, a large group of hobbyists were
in attendance. The Rendezvous informally featured Scorpion and
Trail-A-Sled, Inc. with several large
displays of memorabilia, including rare racing footage and images.

was presented to the standing-room-only crowd that had gathered for the Saturday evening

Crosby-Ironton Courier publishes
a two-page story titled Trail-A-Sled Remembered, Crosby
Natives Pioneered
the Early Snowmobile Industry highlighting TAS' crucial role in
the development of modern snowmobiling. The article also included several rare photographs.
September
28, 2002 – Deerwood, MN
Dick & Eileen Harrison (TAS co-founders) celebrated 50 years
of marriage. Several hundred people attended the open house celebration
that included several programs and a wide range of Scorpion memorabilia.
Old photos and video footage were also on display. Several vintage snowmobiles
graced the hall, including contributions from Ed Webb (Sno-Stuff), Mike Linnenkamp,
Elrey Granbar, and Les Pinz.
ASCOA President Dave Guenther presented
Dick with an honorary
membership and the Harrison children provided their parent's with a copy of
Dick's patent for the
molded rubber track (the original having been destroyed in the tragic 1967 fire).

Legendary Atlanta-based entrepreneur and philanthropist J.B. Fuqua publishes
his memoir, How I Made My Fortune Using Other People’s Money –

9-10, 2002 – Glenwood, MN
Scorpion snowmobiles were the featured sled this year at the Bonanza
Valley Trailblazers second annual vintage rally. Many die-hard collectors
braved the winter’s worst weather to attend the rally, held at
the Lakeside Ballroom. Dick Harrison, company co-founder, was on hand
to answer questions and mingle with the crowd. Les Pinz, former Scorpion dealer, racer
and collector presented an oral history of Scorpion’s founding,
including the firm’s early years when it was known as Trail-A-Sled,
Inc. Ed Webb of Sno Stuff displayed his 1967 Scorpion – one of
three that ran the legendary endurance run from Crosby, MN to Anchorage,
Alaska in February of 1967. Steve Rothfork also presented his extremely
rare matched set of Scorpion Sno-Pros (79, 80, 81). The event was covered by local
ABC affiliate KSAX-TV and featured an interview with Les regarding the Alaskan endurance run.

January,
2002 - Brainerd, MN
The
Lake Country Journal
publishes a fascinating article, There's No Sled Like An Old Sled
which provides an introduction to antique snowmobiling and features the activities
of the ASCOA and their
Annual
Antique Snowmobile Rendezvous, held in
Pequot
Lakes, MN. An overview of Trail-A-Sled, Inc. history was also
provided.
2001 - Manistee, MI
After producing only sixteen 890 cc machines, Scorpion Recreational Products, LLC (SRP) announce the termination of
their efforts to revitalize the Scorpion brand. Sighting vendor
problems and financial difficulties, the group sadly shuts-down, closing
yet another fascinating chapter in Scorpion snowmobile history.

2000
– Lanigan, Saskatchewan
The L. Allister Ingham family posthumously publishes a detailed reference
guide, As the Snow Files: A History of Snowmobile Development in North
America,
Snowmobile Research Publishing. This 758 page hardcover volume
features a thorough review of Trail-A-Sled, Inc. in chapter 26.

The
Brainerd Daily Dispatch publishes an article
titled, Snowmobiles: From Garage Enterprise to Major Manufacturer –
Crosby, MN Men Were Pioneers With Their Snowmobile Plant. The article,
by Dispatch Senior Reporter Renee Richardson, provides a nostalgic view
of the firm and features
quotes from TAS founders.
July, 1998
- Andover, MN
The web site,
SnowConnection.com posts a well-researched article titled,
Scorpion - A Pictorial
History. The article, by former
VSCA editor Mike Kohn featured numerous little known facts and photographs.
1998 - Manistee, MI
An investment group
announces the reintroduction of the Scorpion name to high
performance snowmobiling. Under development for four
years, Scorpion Recreational Products, LLC (SRP), hopes to prepare
several Scorpion models and 2,500 total machines for 1999. Featuring high tech features,
computer-designed engineering and an innovative front-end suspension, SRP
fully intends on returning the Scorpion name to its prior glory.
